Acetone and gas

Ok, I found this link on the internet where it said if you put some acetone in your fuel tank it will boost your gas mileage, So I figured what the hell it wouldn;t hurt to try. I think it actually works. I have 98 Xj with 133000 miles. so Far I filled up my tank and added 4 ounces. so Far I went about 135miles and used less than 1/4 tank?? It sounds too good to be true to me but, has anyone else tried it? I will post my Miles per Gallon once I cycle trhough a few tanks and calculate the average. Until I tried the acetone I get an average of 21.4 Mph which is mostly Highway, I have a 40 mile commute to class every day one way. Also we tried some in my dads Saab. Right now his car gets 26.4mpg average according to the little screen on the dash, well see after a tank or two.
If anyone else has tried it, Let me know...

Re: Acetone and gas

I have also seen this on the net. It's supposed to make the fuel easier to burn with more complete burning. I am interested to see how it works out in the long run, if there are any problems with engine damage or problems with fuel system components that could be harmed by the acetone. It sounds too good to be true, and one of those "they don't want you to know this" kind of things. Keep us posted.

Re: Acetone and gas

I have used Acetone in my '98 XJ for about 4 months now. After trying it with and w/o Acetone for these months, I have came to the conclusion that I get 10% better MPG with it than without. That comes to 2 MPG, don't laugh yet.
10% of $2.20 a gallon is 22 cents, on a 15 gallon fillup I would save $3.30.
It cost about 60 cents for 3 ounces of acetone, so I save a $2.70 on every fill up, one to two times a week. Actually is doesn't save much but considering how much smoother and better that the engine runs while driving at slow speeds with a manual transmission, I would put it in even if it didn't bring better MPG.

Re: Acetone and gas

I usually get about 300 miles per tank of gasoline, not many more, I officially went 219miles and I have 1/2 tank of gas left. I'll refill when it hits 1/4 or so and see what I get...

edit> neon_rt is right, I have noticed it running a lot smoother, it seems to have a bit more power too. mine is also a 5 speed.

Re: Acetone and gas

I read an article in the Repository a couple of Sundays ago, which said that acetone is bad because it eats away at the rubber components. They didn't really get to technical about it. It was mostly joking around saying it eats paint so one spill and we know who is using acetone. But I think I may give it a shot.

Re: Acetone and gas

If you put 100% acetone on rubber parts then I could see some problem with it. However, that is not what we are doing. We are only putting 1-2oz of acetone in 10 gallons of gas. It does alter the properties of the gas some, but there is not enough concentration to harm anything. Most vehicles should be able to hold up to a lot more than a couple ounces of acetone in their tank. Most name brand Gasolines have additives including Ethanol which in it's pure form would destroy almost any fuel system. Some of the fuel injector cleaners and gas treatments have 2-3 ounces of acetone per bottle as their "treatment" ingredient, plus other cleaners and solvents.
