Ran out of gas, still wont start!

I have an 01 Grand Am GT. My car ran out of gas and when I put gas in it still wont start. One time it started up but died after a few seconds. Help me please! Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums. It sounds like when you ran out of gas that you sucked up some dirt and debris from the bottom of the tank and clogged up the fuel system somewhere. I would check the fuel pump and the injectors... Good luck

Do not forget to check the fuel filter.

Once, when I was on a 3 day moving trip... and we were almost here... our U-Haul sucked so much ass.. the computer was freakin out and would limit our speed from 60-40-20 or less... turns out that in the fuel filter and pump was a huge clump of sludge and mud with rocks... like as if it was planted in there... nasty. Fixed free of charge, ty u-haul

The repair shop just called and said its a bad fuel pump. They want $700 part and labor included. Does that seem reasonable?

Well, I just replaced the fuel pump in my 99GA myself, and the part alone was almost $300, so thats probably reasonable with labor.

$700, sounds a little high to me, I would figure in the price range of 400-550...

Call your friends and family and they can find you a mechanic that does repair vehicles on the side. Just purchase the fuel pump yourself and have the mechanic install it for you. It's cheaper that way. Might cost you $100 for the labor. Think about it.

Re: Ran out of gas, still wont start!

if you are going through the Dealer.. $700 is about right.. The dealer quoted me $1000 and it wasn't even the fuel pump. better make sure it is not something else.. like injectors, fuel filter and such.. they maybe trying to rip you off by telling you something that it is not.
If you do buy your own Fuel pump.. make sure you go with factory pump and not non-factory. they may claim to be better but the warrenties on them are not usually as good.

Good luck to you though..
