Question 91 overheating

Ok, here's the deal. My dad is wanting to sell my step-sister's tired 91 Accord. The tranny is slipping and he says that even tho' they just put about $200 worth of belts and hoses in it, they can't figure out why it keeps wanting to run hot with little or no water in the tank. The reason I'm asking is I was thinking of buying it as a second car. I know of where I can get a new tranny fairly cheap, but I'm just wondering how much it will be to fix the overheating problem. Any help would be super!

Re: 91 overheating

well you can part out prices or see what you can get them for locally ..

but its pretty basic ..

radiator good shape ? (no leaks, flush it)
water pump good shape ?
thermostat ? (might be stuck closed) replace with new "low temp"
radiator cap (make sure it is in good - excellent condition)

no leaks, proper coolant mixture, and no air bubbles

first things i would inspect radiator cap, thermostat

let car warm up with radiator cap off... watch as temps get hotter (feel the hoses for warmth) and when it gets hot you should see the coolant start to flow and/or change levels ..

if equiped with ac turn it on full blast .. to speed up the process a bit ..
