serptine belt

Help! Can't keep a belt on my 99 gt. Last about 7000 miles. I will put a new one on and about 6000 mile it starts making noise. It makes noise at the power steering pump. Any ideas? Pump shot? Out of alinement? How do I fix it?

Re: serptine belt

There are several possibilities. 1. The pump is out of alignment and the belt is coming off. 2. The tensioner is bad and causing the belt to move allowing it to pop off after it wears a little bit. 3. Another pulley is bad and is causing the belt to come off. 4. The pump is shot. Pull the belt and check it for play. If there is too much play that will indicate that the pump bearings are gone.

Hope this helps!!!

Re: serptine belt

What kind of noise are you getting? Like GTP Dad states could be any of those things. Is the belt wearing out or not wearing evenly, or getting damaged ?
