Cool Re: Replacing oil pan gasket-HELP!!

I have done this on several trucks, vans included, and if you cannot get the pan off because the oil pump and pickup is in the way, maybe this will help.

The last one I did, I pulled the motor loose from the mounts and raised it as high as I could while it was still in the bay. This allowed me enough room to get into the area in the pan and actually loosen the screws that held the pickup , pump and screen in place. Once I did this, I just dropped the pickup into the pan. The driveshaft for the pump also came out, but no big deal as it was also captured in the pan.

Once I got this stuff into the pan, I was able to remove the pan without pulling the engine.

It is not easy to do, and since I have never had to pull the pan on my '97, I don't know if this is possible. I would consult a Chilton's, Haynes, or better yet, a Mitchell's manual to see what is recommended.

Hope this helps..

later..

Re: Replacing oil pan gasket-HELP!!

If it's a 2wd that will probably work.
If it's 4wd forget it, you'll have to pull the motor.

If that doesn't work, but the gasket is still in 1 piece I would clean it as much as possible, along with the surfaces (brake cleaner or ether work good for this) then slap on the gasket goop. Put the old gasket back on then.

You should have enough room to do this.
