Fuel Pump Wiring Melting.

After my car left me stranded by not starting, and checking for spark-OK, and checking for the the fuel pump powering up when I turn the accessories on-not OK, I decided to drop the fuel tank on my '97 2DR and go after the fuel pump.

What I have found is a bit disturbing. The wiring connectors at the top of the fuel tank, where the wiring from the truck meets the fuel pump, have very obviously burned and are melted. More specifically, it looks like one terminal of the four is severely burned up. Can anyone shed some light on what may cause this, what I should look for and do, etc? I don't want to throw another wiring harness or pump at this thing only to have this happen again. Thanks.

Re: Fuel Pump Wiring Melting.

I had the same problem. I have heard it's fairly common. Mine burnt the contacts of the pump and I had to replace it as well. Dealer sells a replacement harness and crimps as a kit. I think dirty fuel filter causes back pressure and loads the pump, overheating the harness. I change my filter more often now.

Re: Fuel Pump Wiring Melting.

those fuel pumps get very hot when you run your tahoe with less than half or quarter periodically. might not have necessarily had burned completely at that time, but gradually. only other cause could be a short.

Re: Fuel Pump Wiring Melting.

It is a known issue with the tahoe's fuel pump connector. It is recommended that you change it when you replace the pump. Autozone, Napa, or Advance should tell you that when you go to purchase the pump.
