Which came first? And Why???

Hey Guys,
Just tore-apart a '94 Sunbird (2.0 w/FI) we thought had JUST a blown head gasket, and found a severly burnt exhaust valve (v-shaped split and distorted) at the same cylinder leaking. Just like the chicken and the egg, which came first???
