ABS and BRAKE light are on

My daughter has told me that her 1998 Intrigue ABS and BRAKE lights have come on. Also she says she has to "stand" on the brake pedal to stop the car. anyone got any ideas? It kind of sounds like a booster problem to me, but I don't think that would turn on the ABS light, and also I would think she'd be having a idle/rough running condition caused by an intake leak from the booster leaking.

Re: ABS and BRAKE light are on

The BRAKE light indicates a braking system hydraulic failure. I've seen that trigger an ABS light although nothing is really wrong with the ABS part of the system. Sounds like master cylinder, a major fluid leak or booster. But it wouldn't hurt to get it scanned with one capable of detecting GM ABS/Chassis codes.

Question Re: ABS and BRAKE light are on

I went over and drove it.... I noticed excessive pedal effort to stop the car - not real bad or scary, though. The booster appears to hold vacuum, 2 or 3 pumps of the pedal when the car is off exhausts vacuum, also the pedal drops when starting the car, indicating vacuum assist. Pinching off the brake booster vacuum line doesn't change engine performance, indication that the vacuum source is ok. Also I hear some kind of engine compart noise?? Maybe the ABS pump noisy or broken? Can't hear it when listening to the motor at idle with the hood open. I checked all the fuses for ABS and brake lights - I think there are 5 or 6 fuses. I know a dealer tech who does work on the side, I guess I have to set up a time to get the BCM codes scanned.

Update

Ok, i got the codes, Panzer, maybe you can help. There were 2 BCM codes, C1246 and C1286 both relating to rear ABS. I tried looking them up in my 2002 book, but they are not listed, (maybe because the car is a 1998??). The tech says it needs a motor pack. Anyone have an accurate description of these 2 codes? Thanks.

Those codes you gave are not valid (read the post). You need to take your car in and get it scanned with a Tech2 to get valid codes. Either way my AlldataDIY subscription is up and it's my Dad's turn to pay unless I need it for my car.

Re: ABS and BRAKE light are on

Actually, it was a Tech 2 tester, at the Pontiac/Buick dealer where I used to work. I sat in the car with the technician and saw the codes as I wrote them down. And they were both related to ABS functions, something like ABS motor shorted, etc. I didn't pay a lot of attention to the verbose description cuz I thought I would be able to look it up in my manual.

The codes are valid and specific to GM W body cars with ABS. They are ABS CHASSIS codes not BCM. They are clearly defined in a GM service manual and procedures for a Tech II machine diagnostics.

C1286 = EBCM/EBTCM Turned On Red Brake Warning Indicator. This DTC sets because you got a 1246. Correct the 1246 and this will be corrected.

C1246 = Rear ABS Channel Will Not Move. This DTC sets when certain signals to the rear ABS channel are malfunctioning. It is either an ABS Motor Pack or the EBCM/EBTCM module.

Good luck!

Re: ABS and BRAKE light are on

The ABS Module and the ABS sensor are adjacent to each other, if one part goes, both codes show up, and they won't know which one, or both they will need

Re: ABS and BRAKE light are on

Hey bnaylor, thanks for that info. I have a factory manual for my 2002 Intrigue, but can't find those codes anywhere. Is it because it's a 2002 manual and the car is a 1998? What section are you finding the codes in?

Not a problem and you are welcome.

I have the GM service manual on CD for 1998.

The section is entitled Anti-Lock Brake System. 1998 Brakes. General Motors Anti-Lock/TCS - ABS VI and lists the following cars as being applicable to: Buick Century, Buick Regal, Pontiac Grand Prix, and Oldsmobile Intrigue.

The section covers all braking system issues and list the DTC error codes in the back with Tech II procedures. It is about 112 pages long.

I am not sure whether the manuals for later models covers it that good but the older ones do, at least the CD-Rom version. I am not sure about the hard copy version.

Good luck and hope you get it resolved.

bnaylor3400: Post these Intrigue Tech2 C codes under a new topic. As these cars get older I'm sure we will all be getting more of these C code type of problems. These C codes are nowhere to be found. This is the second time this C code problem has shown up. I have seen the generic list of GM C codes, but they don't match up = bogus.

This is one of the few things that only a dealer can diagnose with the Tech2. But it helps us all get an idea of what is wrong and how much $$$ it's going to cost from the Tech2 code diagnosis.

I would put the information under a new topic.

Sounds like a good idea but the codes are mixed in with Tech II procedures and consists of about 90 pages just on scanner so that would be difficult. Plus GM would probably get upset posting copyrighted material.

But if you guys ever need the codes just let me know by post or PM email.
