Question foocked up transmission prevention...how can we overcome?

2000 LS V6 sport pkg. NO transmission problems....yet. is there something that can be done to avoid this pitfall? (service the tranny often? dont use the auto stick?) how much does a trans service cost these days for my baby. is it a do at home job or pay the man job.

thanks
