I have a 2002 Grand Prix SE (31000 engine I believe), it has about 55,000 miles on it. Today while driving I noticed a humming noise aroung 35 miles an hour, it becomes louder as I accelorate, and is pressent when I coast with my foot off the gas. I thought it was my engine but It doesn't make any noise while idling and I put it in nutral and reved my engine to see if I could here anything I didn't... PLEASE HELP ME! I'm scared it's my tranny but I didn't notice anything different with the shifting or the RPMs. I think maybe it might be the Idle pulley but I'm not a mech. You guys are awesome and I greatly appreciet any help. |

Re: I need some help PLEASE!!! I got a noise..
If it only makes the noise when moving, I'd say it's either a hub bearing or the transmission. Hub bearings are a fairly common problem on all ABS FWD cars. If you have a trac-off or ABS light on as well, I'd say it's a hub bearing for sure. If no ABS or trac-off light is lit, it may be the torque converter going bad.

Re: I need some help PLEASE!!! I got a noise..
Okay got some more info...
No ABS lights are on in the car, so I pretty sure it's not that. I tried seeing if it's the Idle pulley because it shifts a lot when Idling. It was already tight, so It kinda worried me. Next I went to Autozone and had them try to code my engine and nothing showed up. I had a few guys taht know a lot about cars ride in it and they said that they had no idea. One of them reved it over and over and said that it was cutting out at 4000 rpms and starting over, he said it was weird. Maybe your onto somethign about the converter but not sure. The other guy said that it should be my tranny, the noise increased with speed not with rpm's. If anyone needs a better discription of the noise it sounds like a airplane. I'm lost and worried. Thank you for the help so far tho. |

Re: I need some help PLEASE!!! I got a noise..
Tranny noise will increase with RPM also depending on what’s wrong. Wheel bearing will get less noisy if you are going straight and turn the wheel. Turn the wheel to the left and if it don't go way turn it to the right JUST DON'T CROSS INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC
If he revved the engine in park or neutral is going to cut out at 4000 to protect the engine. 4T65E's do have a lot of problems with bearings and they make a growling sound. I would check your tires for uneven wear and your wheel bearings. |

Re: I need some help PLEASE!!! I got a noise..
One of the guys checked out all of them, said it looked fine. It doesn't have anythign to do with the stearing, it keeps up with going straight. I still hear it when switching lanes and what not. I made an error with my last message, he didn't think it was my tranny cause it didn't increase with RPM's only with speed. What has a lot of problems lol? BTW you're name Troy?

Re: I need some help PLEASE!!! I got a noise..
Cutting out at 4k rpm while free-revving, is normal. It's the rev-limiter kicking in to keep you from grenading the engine. The airplane noise puts it back to a torque converter. As the torque converter is designed to allow slippage, a bad torque converter will not always change pitch with RPM, but will with changes in speed. There is an ouside chance that it's still a hub bearing as well, as they don't always change pitch due to steering inputs, and will also make an airplane like noise.

Re: I need some help PLEASE!!! I got a noise..
I found out the real problem with my car a few days ago. They had to replace the engine in it and the hub caps.
LMAO just kidding... No the real problem was that the left wheel hub bearing is f'ed up and it needs to be replaced. I'm going to try to do both, but it's going to cost a pretty penny. Anyways thanks for the help. P.S. Troy my name is Troy too, that makes us better than everyone here, :P |
