Rear Leaf Spring bushings Install

I am about to install bushings in my rear leaf springs. a 2002 durango 4x4. Please describe how to disconnect the leaf springs. I dont know if it is dangerous or notwith all the tension these springs have. do i have to drop the whole rear end? where do i support the truck on the axle shaft housing, or the truck frame? any and all assisstance geatly appreciated.I just dont want to get hurt. I have jacks, stands and tools of all kinds, so please tell me how to change these bushings.

just curious - Why are you replacing them?

To answer your question. Its not really that dangerous, you'll need to support the truck under the frame and use a floor jack. (Or two strong friends) to catch the wieght of the axle when you remove the spring bolts from the frame and hangers. (Remember this may also involve removing shocks, drive shaft, brake line etc. I've done plenty of trucks for lifts and such, but not a Durango)

N8Zdogg that's info i needed, thanks!! replacing cause of terrible squawking, rattle type noise back there. Rattle turned out to be an aftermarket type padlock system, with lots of slopp in it and metal to metal contact. Might as well had a hammer back there and beat on it. The squawking i assume is comming from the bushing set. But i aint sure. Thanks for your short,direct,and very usefull how to.

If you suspect the spring shackle bushings are the source of the noise, I would try saturating them with a silicone spray lube....might just get rid of the noise....worth a try first.

By the way, what is "an aftermarket type padlock system"?

Durango Dave I will try a lubrication as you suggest. The aftermarket padlock, is a unit which secures the spare tire from theft. It was not a "factory" item. Was very poorly engineered and had so much freeplay in the locking rod, that it actually sounded like a hammer blow when going over bumps. i just cut the blasted thing off. Not really needed imho, and now its just one less thing!

N8ZDogg Yes, the spring bushings are o.k. I replaced the rear sway bar bushings, and link bars left and right side. Read somewhere that guys were using motorcycle chain lube on bushings, it wont hurt rubber, and has a waxy, sticky form to it is waterproof and wont wash off as easy as other type lube. I lubed everything i could think of under there. One guy who did this reported going on 30 days now, and no re occurrance of squeeks.Than you for your help very much. i always wanted to know especially how to get a rear end out of a vehicle. knowledge is priceless. Better than darn stealer fees!! Thanks to all.
