No Brakes!?!?

Ok guys, here's the details. My antilock brake light has been on for a long time because the one sensor is bad. I hate antilock brakes with a passion... I will happily remove them if there is a way... So on to my problem...

I was driving home tonight and the antilock brake light went out and I thought that was wierd. So I hit my brakes and the antillock brakes went crazy and I couldn't stop. I was on a pretty deserted road so I was messing with them. I would pull it out of gear and put it into nuetral and then hit my brakes and the antilock brake light would come back on and they would work normal. I put it back into gear and then hit my brakes and the light would go out and the antilock brakes went crazy again. So, I had to keep putting it into nuetral and using my e-brake to get home. Well, I was about 10 minutes from getting home and they started working normal again all the time. So my question is what the hell is wrong with my brakes? Any ideas at all? Is it because of the one bad wheel sensor or something else?

Re: No Brakes!?!?

First off make sure that the brake fluid is full. That happened to me when I was changing my brakes and forgot to top-off.

Also, Why do hate ABS with a passion? They are like the greatest safety feature on a car, and will get you out of a very bad mess when the time comes!

I'm gonna check the fluid in the morning to make sure its full but it should be... But yeah, I grew up without antilock brakes in my Firebird so I'm just used to not having them. In the wintertime I could lock up the brakes in the Firebird and keep perfect control of it just because I had to learn how to. With the antilock brakes its like whoa I can't control it like I need to. Just my thoughts on it though. Some people like em, some don't. I don't. lol

Re: No Brakes!?!?

Year make and model would help.
Well the anti lock brake light has been trying to tell you something for a long time.
Now it got tired of you not paying any attention and decided to jog your memory about it being on.
Man them things are just like women you do not ignore them and get by with it.
First after checking the brake fluid you need to have the ABS codes checked and data read out.
Post back code no along with year make and model.
And yes you have to have a ABS capable scanner to get the codes on most of them.
Give up the make year and model and I will check for sure if you need a scanner.

Hmmm, last time I checked my sig still had my make year and model... Oh hey, look... Its still in there... Come on man, I'm not a newbie here. The whole point of our sigs is to already include that information, which mine does.

Didn't I already mention that I hate the antilock brakes and enjoyed them not doing their job. lol If there is a way to just remove the whole system that would be nice. But for now I suppose I should find out whats going on and probably fix it. Oh yeah, I don't have a scanner to get my codes either.

Re: No Brakes!?!?

I dont have ABS on my car and I like it so much better. You do have to get use to it but its worth it.
BlackCrow- Vfaq has a write up about how to change to non abs n a 1g, that should give you and idea of what needs to be done.

Yeah, I am completely used to not having ABS so a conversion would be nice. I did see that write up on vfaq but none of the pictures work anymore and I'm curious as to how much different the 2g's are... Did they have any 2g's that came without the ABS?

Well pardon me all to hell for not checking your sig for what cars you have.
But if you look at the sig,s a lot of them do not contain that info since the AF has been redone.
And even then the auto in the sig may not be the one the poster is asking about. That is what I was trying to get from you.
By knowing what car you are asking about I could have told you to ground pin 1 on your diagnostic connecter and you can read the code on that car.
Or may have been able to help a little more.

Right now if your brakes are acting that bad or like that.
You are between a rock and a hard place.
You need to fix the ABS or do away with the ABS system. Your choice. Good Luck MT

Re: No Brakes!?!?

Hey Blackcrow, do the eclipse's have an ABS fuse? My eclipse never had ABS so I wouldnt know.

BUT, my family has a Ford Windstar (work van, lol) and it has ABS, but when they ABS stopped working it was because the fuse had blown.

SOOOO, maybe if you want to get rid of the ABS in you talon, just take out the fuse, ( I just remebered the eclipse's do have an ABS fuse...its in the engine fuse box). The ABS light will probably come on, but if that doesnt bother you than just pull the fuse!

That is one way to kill a ABS system.
But one word of caution.
Make sure you try the brakes a few times before take off.
Some abs systems require the abs pump motor to run to build up hydraulic. pressure for the reg brakes to work. No pressure no brakes.
I am not sure what type of system he has. So I can not say for sure.
But he did say he had no brakes when they acted up so he could have one of them that has no reg brake if the abs pump motor does not run.

Re: No Brakes!?!?

No, it wasn't that I didn't have any brakes at all. The ABS would kick in when I would push my brakes for no reason but I still couldn't stop because of it. They were just a humming on and off and I was hating every minute of it. But when the tranny would be in nuetral the brakes were fine and normal. The brake fluid was full too... I know that in the snow when I would hit the brakes, my ABS DID NOT work and I would just slide around. Which is how I like it. But in the middle of a nice sunny day, theres no reason for them to be kicking on.
