Updated Timing Belt Kit Questions...1.8L
I bought an updated timing belt kit for my 1.8L turbo (1998 Passat). I had a couple questions.
On the original roller, there is an adjustment that you have to make for the tension. On the new roller I received, there is no way to make an adjustment. So does this mean an adjustment is not necessary when I install this? And, on the tensioner, it came with a pin holding down the adjustment rod. Well, I pulled the pin out when I installed it, but then I had to remove the tensioner again. Now I cannot get the rod to go back down inside of the tensioner so i can get the pin back in. I thought the tensioner was spring loaded and I would be able to get it to go back down....but I can't. Did I so something wrong? Lastly, on the original tensioner, there is another pulley/roller that is on one of the bolts securing the tensioner. Do I still use this with the updated tensioner? Thanks for the help... I am not at this point yet, but I would like to figure out what I have to do. I am in the process of removing the cylinder head due to the timing belt failure. I will get the head checked out to see how the valves are....even though I am pretty positive there are problems.......I don't see how there can't be. |

Re: Updated Timing Belt Kit Questions...1.8L
the tensioner is spring/hydraulic. you need to put it in a vise and compress it very slowly ( cantake up to 5 min to compress a new one) if you compress too fast the tensioner can burst... then you have 2 buy a new one. once compressed put the pin back in.
as for the roller the updated tensioner should have the bracket adapter on it that bolts to the roller to tension the roller. the belt will be very hard to get on, you will most likely need a screwdriver to put the belt on.
