Fuel pump relay

I have a 95 Jetta, auto, 2.0, 180,000km. Recently I had problems with the starter, so I replaced it. Problem solved and the car starts fine. However, once I went to start the car I noticed with the key in the on position the fuel pump begins to prime but the relay for the pump continuously click on and off until the car starts, once started the pump opperates normally. I checked and cleaned all the connections on the battery and starter and it all looks OK, but still the fuel pump relay clicks. This is driving me crazy. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Fuel pump relay

I've been checking wires and connections for days now, still cannot find the problem. One thing I forgot to mention was the starter is a 2003 and my jetta is a 1995, I'm not sure if this would be the problem. Also something has been slowly draining the battery, some mornings there is just enough power to start but it always starts. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Re: Fuel pump relay

Ahhh, You have provided a clue. I suspect that there is no problem with the relay or wiring. That something that is draining the battery is lowering the voltage sufficient enough that the relay barely has enough voltage to move the armature (of the relay) and thus the click click. Find your source draining the battery and perhaps your problem will go away.

Re: Fuel pump relay

sounds like you might have a faulty ignition switch. with that many miles it problably needs replacement anyway.

Re: Fuel pump relay

Well, I just put in a new ignition switch and a new battery and still the same thing(Click Click Click etc.). I'm now thinking that it could be the coil or the ecu itself. Thank you for the suggestions. Keep them coming I need all the help I can get.

Re: Fuel pump relay

Still same problem, I was just wondering if a bad coil would do any strange things prior to ignition. Such as draw excess power or send goofy signals. Also I was wondering what tells the system that there is enough fuel pressure built up so the fuel pump can cut out. Thanks again for all your help.

Re: Fuel pump relay

well if the ignition coil is bad than it can cause a no start, but it wont effect fuel getting to fuel rail.

try hitting the starter / solenoid with a hammer and try starting. click click means either dead battery or dead starter

Re: Fuel pump relay

Hello and thanks for responding. The clicking is the fuel pump relay, I can feel it clicking when I put my hand on it. Something is telling the relay to turn on and off, I have already tried a new relay and the same clicking was present. And I know it's not the starter because I put a new one in. Any other ideas? Thanks.
