Clutch Went Out???
I have a 1979 280zx 5-speed. It was raining today and all the streets were wet so I decided to drive my car around. I was hot rodding it around for a while and when I was going up a slight incline, my clutch started slipping very badly and just quit turning the engine after about 10-15 seconds. What would have caused my clutch to go out like this? I have had no problems with the clutch or transmission (except for the car being a little hard to go into reverse every now and then) until now. Also, when I go to replace the clutch, will I be able to just replace the clutch disk and resurface the flywheel or will I have to buy an entire clutch assembly? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Clutch Went Out???
you'll want to replace the pressure plate as well if your clutch indeed did go... what do you mean by quit turning the engine? if the engine died that doesn't mean your clutch went.... if the engine was revving faster than it normally does with the clutch enguaged (ie revving and not accelerating) then it was definitely slipping.... usually it starts to slip a little bit before it completely blows, but all that sliding might have wrecked it... as for what might have happened, you might have warped the plate and smashed it or something could have come loose... who knows, sometimes they just up and explode (for example)
but yeah, you will want to replace your pressure plate too...

Re: Clutch Went Out???
Thanks a lot for the info DeleriousZ! What I meant by "it quit turning the engine" was that after the 10-15 seconds of the clutch slipping really bad, the clutch no longer did anything......it was like i had the car in neutral or having the clutch depressed....I couldnt go anywhere...

Re: Clutch Went Out???
no problem... but now that i think about it, check all your hydraulic lines for the clutch.. it almost sounds like one burst or you developed a large leak in the system... easiest way to check is look at the reservoir at the back of the drivers side in the engine bay...

Re: Clutch Went Out???
That happened to me one time. There was a little smoke coming from where the trans. is. and it smelled like burned clutch every time I drove my car. Turns out that I cracked the flywheel and when I looked at the clutch it looked melted. but when i got the car the clutch was slipping so I knew it was just matter if time. Now I have a ACT 6 pad racing clutch. I love this clutch, engagement is instantaneous. If were you I would just buy a whole now clutch, if you have the money. good luck
