WIP - 1997 SLP Camaro SS

What's up, Haven't built a model since I was about 14-15 (I'm 18 in a month ort two. ) Anyways, I was surfin ebay and found a decent deal on a model of my car (I have a red 1994 Camaro Z28 ttop, however my dream car is a 1997 SS ttop)

All I've done is opened it really. I'm gonna go buy some paint soon so I'll have some post paint pics in a week or two.

Alright and lastly, my first question. If you can see on the box, where the headlight area is black. What is the best way to mask off the body so I can spray paint that area black. Do you recommend Flat or Gloss Black?

Nice pick on that kit. I love the LT-1 SS`s! What colors are you going to paint it? I painted mine dark polo green metallic with white interior.
As for the headlight area, it is going to be difficult to mask and paint. If you are experienced with bare metal foil, you may want to cover the general area with that, and cut out the "black areas" and then spray. Otherwise, use a good masking tape from a hobby store. Tamiya has nice masking tape for this. Some people also use the blue painter`s tape that you can get at Home Depot etc.
Cover the area with the tape, and cut out the black areas with a hobby knife. Spray a single coat of clear, and allow to become tacky (prevents the black paint from "bleeding" under the tape). Then spray a coat or two of semi-gloss black.
Let us know what kind of paint are you going to use for the body, as this will determine what type of black paint you can use for the headlight area.

I'm not "Addicted to the hobby" like some of you, so I'm only using your generic Ace Hardware "Now Spray Paint"

Body color is "Wagon Red"
Also Picked up Aluminum and Gloss Black, gotta find Flat Black in the garage soon.

Anyways, got 2 coats on a couple body parts.

Hawk - Is the engine black and the tranny aluminum?!?
Also, did your kit come with a red third brakelight?




what color should I pickup for the air filter? Aren't K&N "orange?" I should go by my moms tomorrow and see how many of my childhood paints are still there.

And another welcome to you. I find extra gentle blue painters tape (inch thick) to be great.

The LT1 was a cast iron block with aluminum heads, so the the block itself should be gloss black and the heads should be aluminum/silver. The K&N air filter should be a dark pink color. Here is a pic of the Lindberg Firehawk I built:

For small area like headlights and airfilters it's easier to use a brush.
I'd use flat red for the filter, maybe with it with a bit of black.

You could spray some Tamiya flat black on a AOL cd or something and then brush it on the headlight housing... it dries nice and without brush marks.

Other paints might show brush marks when applied with a brush!

Mmmm.. Nice, I have to say if I had one of those kits I'd set out to make a replica of Project Speedy from F-bodyhideout.com ... I love that car!

TTT, I haven't worked on this in a while but here's what happened.

I was un happy with the paint - got some bubbles and couldn't sand them out so I ordered a 1993-1997 Camaro Z28 Police edition on ebay.

I didn't insure it and when I got it the body was warped and it had cracks along the top of both front a-pillars and under the rear tail light.

The rear taillight has been fixed and is smooth to touch (i need to go over it with really fine grit sand paper) However, I'm thinking of cutting the roof off, putting the sun visor top piece from the conv. onto the roofless car, then putting a t-top bar in the middle, thus making it a ttop car w/ ttops out.

What's the best way to cut? what grits sand paper will I need? Also am I doomed with the warped body, or will cutting it up help it?

If you wanted to save the 'vert, give the body a dip in a pan of castrol super clean or brake fluid. I typically use brake fluid. Then give it a GOOD wash with some soap and water. let it air dry and then have another go at it
