Speedometer Clicking noise

Has anybody been able to lube their speedometer? If so what is involved after the cluster is out? Mine seems to make a clicking noise which I assume could be helped with a little oil. Has any one else had this problem?

I ask because I've taken many clusters out but never tried to work on the speedometer before....

You didn't mention what year your van is, but I believe most vehicles since about 1995 use speed sensors and electronic speedometers.

Anyway, if you do have a cable, use GRAPHITE to lubricate it. Oil attracts dust and dirt and will probably make it worse over time.

Sorry, it is a 2000 and yes it is electronic. Is there a way to lube the speedometer gear? Or am I looking at a new cluster?

You MIGHT be able to get it apart and lubricate the speedometer, but everything I have seen shows the instrument cluster as a single unit.

According to my manual, "serial speed data" is sent to the instrument panel where software determines what speed to display on the gauge.

Yeah I have found some used clusters through car-part.com in my area, my manual says I need to sync the air bag modules with the cluster by using a scan tool, I have a scan tool but not the GM tech 2 which I think I need here. Has anybody swapped clusters before? Thanks.

According to the dealer, this is "Normal" My speedometer in my 2002 mantana makes a grinding, noise coming from the tachometer when the idle revs up. They tell me that the Envoy has the same problem, and swapping clusters, doesn't matter. Another Great GM Quality product!!!

Had a clicking noise after I reset the trip odo and realized that I had not pushed it in completely - sounds like yours is not that easy to fix

I wish it was that easy! I got a new Cluster from the junk yard, now I just need to find some time to put it in! Thanks for all of your help....I wonder if the odometer mileage is stored on the cluster or in the PCM??? Anybody know?

My service manual says:
"The total accumulated mileage is permanently stored in the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). If an odometer malfunction occurs or if the IPC must be replaced, an authorized Delco service center must be contacted to program proper vehicle specifics (including mileage) for the IPC."

But I am a "computer/electronics guy" and might try actually removing and swapping components between instrument panels. I would NOT recommend this for anyone that is not experienced in doing such a thing.
