Pontiac paresianne

I drive a 1985 pontiac paresianne station wagon,Just lately it has been dieing on me when I drive slow for a period of time, like through town at 25 mph...I thought it was electrical and had the battery and alternater checked the battery was a little weak so I replced it..Now I think it may be a fuel problem. My question is since I dont have the book for this car is there an inline fuel filter somewhere on this car that may be clogged and need to be replaced????

Re: Pontiac paresianne

yes there is, but it sits on a spring and when clogged will open up to allow unfiltered gas through... so, that's not it unless dirt has already gotten in the carb. and clogged it up. It's actually in a housing where the fuel line bolts into the carb. That's what the big nut at the base of the carb removes.

Does it shut completly off, or "cut out" for a couple of seconds then come back on? Do you have to re-start it, or does it do it quick enough to start running on its own again?

Is it 25mph and higher speeds, or only in the 25 mph range... IE: does it do it at highway speeds?

Finally, which engine do you have?? Buick 3.8(V6), chevy 305(V8), or the Olds 307(V8)?

Re: Pontiac paresianne

It shuts completely down and I have to restart it,it only does it at lower speeds if I keep my foot on the gas and the brake it will stay running, the engine is the 305v8.

Gas and Brake... while you're driving??? is it fine at stop lights when in gear or do you have to take it out of gear??

final question... If you let it die... does it sputter or blow smoke?? or is it like you just shut off the key. How easiely does it re-start (do you have to floor it to start it, or does it just re-start like nothing happened)?

If it's fine at lights while in gear, blows no smoke, and re-starts like normal then it's electrical... probably the Ign. module or a bad coil or wire.

If it stalls at lights, blows smoke, or gives you trouble when re-starting (like having to floor it to get it running again), then you've got fuel probs. probably just need the carb. cleaned.

I myself, would pull out the fuel filter from the Carb. housing (yes, just remove it and put it back empty), then get a good IN-Line filter from the parts store (metal one). They're better and won't let anything through when they get clogged up.... just splice it in the fuel line in front of the carb. That's not your problem (now), but will be a good start.

Let me know the rest and I'll try to help you.

Ok... more than likley a prob. with the carb.. idle passage or intermediate passages might be clogged, run some cleaner through it.

Also... check for Vacum leaks... Get a can of Quick start, and while its running spray around the carb base and see if the engine revs up.. if it does then you have a leak there at the gasket or throttle blade shaft (Qjets are known for that issue). Check all the Vac. hoses too, a hose that's broken or off will cause a excessive lean condition and make it stall at low speeds in gear (sometimes out of gear too).

HTH.
