Question; 98 Headlight assembly Grinding!!! trans am

I HAVE THIS IN THE TRANS AM FORUM THOUGH ONE OF YOU MAY KNOW THE PROBLEM

Okay one day im coming home from work and its starting to get dark enough for the lights to be on well.... i turn the lights on and they turn on and flip up just fine. Well i get home and then i turn the lights off and i hear a grinding sound with they go down, almost like the motor is just spinning right on top of the gear and is shreading the gear? .... BUT i dont know for sure so im asking you guys if you might know what the problem is. will i need a new assmebly or will i just need a new motor?

They lights go up and down, but the grinding sound is just with they go down completly then the sound starts. Very loud... also when i push the keyless entry button both headlamps go up and come back down and then it starts grinding

WHATS UP SO I CAN FIX IT!!!

EDIT: its on a 98 trans am

You need to get new headlight motors. This is a common problem on firebirds. You have a couple options. You can get a new OEM or aftermarket motor and just swap it, or what i would suggest you do is go on ebay and look for the brass headlight gears. Your problem is caused because the plastic gear is getting chewed up, if you get the brass gear this should solve your problem for a long time

as stated, this is a common problem that unbeleavably after so many years, since the the 82's, GM still put el cheapo plastic gears in the retractable (flip) lights. upgrades are out there.
