The fuel injection system on the 2.2l does not work well with upgrades. If you do very much to the engine, it will not run at all. On mine, I put on a low resrtriction exhaust and ground out the restrictor plate under the throttle body. My guess is that I picked up 8-10HP.
If you want to put in a 2.5 turbo, you will need a doner car b/c you will need the Engine/Transmission, Fuel Injection/Computer, Fuel Pump/Filter and a few other parts and a lot of hours doing the project. You might be better off selling your current car and buying one with the turbo in it, even if the car didn't run and you had to rebuild it, it would be less work.

I am not aware of any after market upgrades for the 2.2 engine. But you will have to be careful if you find any, especially if you have an automatic transmission. The miniature torqueflite used in these cars is only strong enough to handle no more than 150 horsepower. Try to put more power than that through it and it will overstress the internals and eventually blow up. I learned this the hard way after the wastegate stuck shut in my 2.5 Turbo (1991) and I ran it this way for about a year and a half (boy, was I getting good boost out of it then). Right after I had the turbo fixed, I fragmented a clutch plate in the front clutch pack, putting metal fragments throughout the transmission, causing the trans to stick in high gear. One year after the rebuild, something else came loose inside, jamming the rear planetary gear set and causing the splines in the sun gear to shear off. The tranny has been fine for two years now after the second rebuild. Good thing I had a 3-year warrantee.

Yes, these cars would be nice with a little more power, Hoo, hoo, hoo... (a little Tim Allan lingo there). But that extra power can cost you more than you bargained for.

From what I've read, transmissions are rated on torque capacity, not HP capacity.

The 3-speed auto in the Shadow is a lighter duty model than the one in the Mini-Vans. I think they are interchangeable. You would have to check that out with Shadow/Sundance racers. The heavier duty model is also used in the 1st Gen and some of the 2nd Gen Neons. In a Neon, if you add a shift kit, I have heard of people with Both the Sohc (132hp) and Dohc(150hp) using 50hp shot NOS without problems. There are some 2.5l Turbo Minivan racers that have the Auto and they run about 300hp.
