2002 GT 5-speed clutch slipping?

My 65,000 mile GT feels like the clutch is slipping when shifting with a lot of power. It feels like it is somewhat slow to fully engage. This doesn't happen all the time, but mostly happens when I am hard on the gas accelerating even when the clutch pedal is all the way released. After what feels like a small amount of slip it engages fully and the feeling goes away. I believe the clutch needs to be replaced, or is it something else? Also I have had a click in the front end sine the car was almost new. I took it to the shop under warrently and the replaced/check the front suspension and the problem never really went away other than for a short period. The click is more like something falling into place and metal to metal. It goes click or click - click, not click, click, click ..... Could this problem have been related?

Re: 2002 GT 5-speed clutch slipping?

the clicking could be a motor mount.

it does sound like your clutch is slipping. when you accelerate and switch gears, does it take a second or two for the gear to like "kick in"?

yeah, that would be the symptoms of a slipping clutch

does the clicking go away when the clutch is engaged?

The clicking could be TOB rattle or lifters. I know the DSM's have a lifter problem that make them click.

Re: 2002 GT 5-speed clutch slipping?

The clicking occurs around the shift clutch in and clutch out. I would imangine it is related to the clutch. I am going to call Mitsu and see if the help on the labor due to the fact that the problem was found, but not solved under warranty. It is worth a try. But, if they are going to do it I want them to install an ACT 2600. I plan to go SDS soon so I was going to replace the clutch anyway. I want to make sure everything is perfect before the BOOST comes. I am also replacing the brake with Powerslot. Should I go big or standard size?

Re: 2002 GT 5-speed clutch slipping?

mine got the rattle the first day i got the new clutch put in, and it was on the old one too, i think i'll try upgrading to an ACT

and teh dealership will do nothing about TOB rattle, at least nothing permanent, so your best bet is to get a nicer aftermarket clutch that is immune, like centerforce and ACT i believe have good non TOB rattle clutches

i dont' think they make a 2600 for our cars though, its just the ACT heavy duty or something weird like that....

as for brakes, i'd like to get ahold of some evo8 brakes for myself, the fed-spec swap is also an upgrade. it just depends on what you feel like, there is nothing that says bigger isn't better with brakes, as long as you can handle them, and if you are boosted, all the more reason to get them

Re: 2002 GT 5-speed clutch slipping?

Bigger brakes will only make a difference if there is a lot of rubber up front. Make sure you get some big ass tires to hug the road (not only for stopping but also for the go boogy).

The brembos look awesome too along with the added stopping benefits. Make sure you get some wheels with the correct offset that will clear them instead of getting spacers and longer studs for the stock wheels (makes me feel safer).

No...my 2000 GT has ABS, they might have changed it, but I am pretty sure it was standard on mine.
