Cutting and using new gaskets

I have been working on the Throttle Body of the Geo Metro 3 cylinder engine
and need new gaskets.

I have never worked on an engine before to the point of having to replace
gaskets, so this part of it is new to me.

I bought a sheet of Gasket Material from Shucks for $3.

First - what is the best way to obtain the "pattern" of the required gasket if
the old one was trashed when the part was removed? i.e. no old one to use
as the guide.

Second - once cut (use a hobby knife/razor?), should the gasket be soaked in
motor oil
or oiled or greased or what? I see various types of "STUFF" for
use as gasket material, so I assume the gasket has to be soft and/or wet
to make a good seal with the two metal parts.

Huh?

"Glue the gasket to the case surface with a gasket adhesive.
We prefer Casket-Cinch. Allow the adhesive to dry."

So I should glue it on...... The gaskets on the old parts fell off (usually in
small pieces). Glue, huh? That caught me by surprise!

I do have leather punches that I bought from Harbor Freight Tools - I like that
idea for the screw holes.

Huh?

Is the thickness a big issue for the Geo Metro Throttle Body parts?
For the EGR Valve gasket?

Huh?

Not to oil the gasket then?
I was fond of that concept.....as the simple minded older bureaucrats who
emigrate from California to other states say when they go to your City Council
and try to get their Assinine Laws placed on your books say, "Seems like a
good idea to me!"
Socialism is alive and spreading like the Bird-Flu Virus!

Huh?

Was...? "Verspotten Sie mich? Mai Ihre Strümpfe fällt hin!"

Mock you? Never...... May my socks fall down? Socks? You mean pants - no?

Okie Dokie. Anyway......onward (maybe) - But first....a word from the old Capitalist prique.

"I wonder which is worse rampant Capitalism or a Caste system run by elitist Socialists?
KILL EM ALL AND LET SATAN SORT THEM OUT!"
He lives in Massachucetts now - has grey hair and is fat!

What is 'rampant Capitalism'? What we have in China now? Taiwan?

I love that phrase "Caste system run by elitist Socialists"

SO RIGHT!

All their "neat ideas" are for you to live by, not them!

You drive the Yugo to save the Environment - they will drive in Limosines like Edward Kennedy.

You must give up your pistol while Rosie O'Donnell and Ted Kennedy have their bodyguards carry theirs.

You live with Social Security while they have their own private, elite system that no-one can fool with.

And why are they always so damned rich? You never see a poor one in power. They are always rolling in money....

You keep your mouth shut by PC Rules while they can say any damned thing they want - "freedom of speech" you know!

You live in public housing while they live in mansions with a cadre of servants.

In Russia they traded the Czar for other elitist Emperors. Stand in line!

See! You got me started.... your fault!

I shall go forth and search the land for some "Gaskacinch". Sounds like a belt for folks with
excessive flatulism.....

DoctorBill.......The Old Conservative Prique.

PS - Is the Stock Market going to go UP or DOWN in the next month...? I want to know!

"Glue" (Gaskacinch) actually never hardens and is much like rubber cement. What makes it such a huge hit with me that if you ever need to get back inside the gasket comes right off. In fact hardened old gaskets can be softened with this product.

1/16" should do the job if you really wish to endeavour into gasket making. I always consider this a last resort especially when the gaskets are about $5 @ NAPA. Time is money Dr. F!

The more rampant the better, you can never get enough.

Re: Cutting and using new gaskets

I went to Schucks and NAPA to look for that "Gaskacinch" of which
you wrote today.

No gots….! They hadn't seen that since Lincoln was president.

Have you purchased that product of late? If so, who carries it?

So I decided to purchase a tube of PERMATEX Form-a-Gasket
Sealant Number 2 for $3. Supposedly stays flexible and comes off
even tho it is 'tacky.'

No big deal really……..

Well, it snowed today - MERDE ! A big snow storm is moving in tonight
and it will snow all weekend.

Why does the weekend always have the bad weather?

Does God have a sense of humor? and don't say, "Yes, he made you
didn't he?"

Re: Cutting and using new gaskets

I was at my workbench trying to cut out the Gasket for the TB Top half to
bottom half.

It is a bit of a bugger trying to locate all the holes since some don't go all the
way thru the part, so one can't insert a marking device.

I tried rubbing some pencil lead on the part and rubbing paper on it.
That works after a fashion.

Then I had a brilliant idea!

Would that small part give a pattern off of my scanner?

I have an HP psc 1315xi printer/scanner.

I sat the TB top half and then the TB bottom half on the glass
(gently but gently!) and scanned them.

Wow!

Here is what I got for the TB Bottom half to the Intake Manifold:
Not 1:1 on this particular Forum - just FYI only....

It printed one to one! I now have a paper pattern that is the exact same
size as the item which I can cut out and use as a pattern for the Gasket
Material...... Once cut out, you can invert it or whatever you want.

One could also use a Xerox machine if someplace would let you do it.

Just don't break their glass! I think they'd be pissed.....

How's them apples ?

Re: Cutting and using new gaskets

Hey that's the way to improvise Dr. Bill!

I pulled the intake and TB among other things off my parts car today, man is my back sore after bending over that Geo.

The old horse ain't what she used to be, that's for sure.
