Tokico Shock Question

I am trying to install the Tokico Illumina shocks on my 1994 Miata using the stock springs. It seems as though the Tokicos are actually 1 inch shorter than the stock shock but the dealer said that they would not lower the car.
It seems to me that the shorter shock would lower the car or at least stiffen the ride.

I am trying to maintain the stock height for street use but have the ability to adjust for occassional track days. I am thinking of going with the KYB AGX since the are the same length as the stock shock.

Has anybody else used the Illumina shock with the stock springs?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Warren

Re: Tokico Shock Question

I think you should be ok as long as the distance between the bottom of the shock to where the bottom of the spring rests is the same as before. As long are you are using the same springs, this distance will determine the spring tension (and length at rest) once the shock is assembled and the car is back on the ground.

When you say the shock is a different length do you mean:

1. The shock body is shorter
2. Comparing both at full extension
3. Comparing both at full compression

Regardless I think as long as the distances that determine the spring tension at rest and normal driving conditions are the same, the car height will not be affected.

That said, I replace my 94 miata's shocks with the KYB AGX and am quite happy with them. The original shocks on the 94s wore out so fast.

Post Re: Tokico Shock Question

you could always buy a ride height adjustable coilover kit
i'm not a big fan of the 'one size fits all' spring compressing kits but then again i've heard no complaints about them
