M3 Competiton Transmission Noise

Hey Guys,

I'm new to all this forum stuff. You all seem to know evertyhing about these cars...I just bought an 06 M3 Coupe with Competition package...and the the 6 spd manual makes a clunking/rattling noise while changing gears, especially in stop and go traffic (not all the time).

I've been told this is normal. Is this true. I would really appreciate your help. I hate my dealer, and I don't want to go there unless I'm forced to.

Thanks,

Aeen

Since you're new to all this forum stuff allow me to give you some info that some of us have learned .... mostly the hard way:

Believe absolutely nothing that you read on the Net!

I know it sounds harsh and it seems that i'm trying to drive you away.

It may be harsh but i'm NOT trying to discourage you.

What you must understand is that the forums are populated primarily by two types of persons: Youngsters w/more enthusiasm and desire to help than true knowledge and commercial interests looking for your hard earned cash.

Amongst all this, mostly well meaning, chaff are a few RKIs and some true experts in a variety of topics/issues.

To find the wheat it takes a skeptical nature (albet a polite one) and diligence. If you're willing to question, cross-reference and search a variety of sources .... then make up your own mind based on your NEEDS .... not what we may think you need .... you'll be well served by the forums.

Otherwise you WILL suffer needlessly.

BTW, it's very important that you offer detailed info in when asking for our help. Or most of the true RKIs, etc, will ignore you. Or even chastise you .... which you won't like. [chuckle]

For example: We don't know if you know how to operate an MT M3 properly. Most persons I know THINK they know how to shift an MT .... the VAST majority do NOT.

BTW: I'm a certified HP driving instructor (as above, don't take my word for it ask for proof .... but i remind you; always ask politely). I do know what I speak of.

Cool; welcome to the ZCP club. Enjoy! I have an 05 ZCP but it's HEAVILY modded and SMG.

User error would be my first thought because I don't know you.

It can be true .... if it's user error.

Is it possible for you to see another dealer? And/or find an RKI who can drive w/u and help determine if it is indeed a prob or user error?

Once again forgive me for raining on your parade but if you can't get along w/your dealer(s) you are sooo screwed that you should sell the car and buy a diffrent car form an MFG w/a dealer network whom you can work with.

For example: For 05 I wanted a Gallardo but decided that the Lambo dealer network is so poorly represented and Italian MFGs so difficult to deal with (IME) that I chose another SMG M3 instead.

Peace,

Ronin.

Re: M3 Competiton Transmission Noise

This is normal for a M3 manual. Its just the backlash in the transmission, nothing to worry about. Remember this car is not designed to be good crawling along in traffic.
