Re: i need a 2001 mazda 626 4 cyl engine... and help

-manual goes out from the bottom w trans.
-automatic comes easiest from top without trans.
-torque converter bolts removed from hole left by starter.
-don't forget to swap the flex plate on back of engine, if your new one doesn't have one.
-harness is real easy to pull up... no real tips there.
-i reccomend replacing the thermostat on any used engine.
-careful with the rubber spacers on the 2 nuts at the back of the bottom crossmember... leave them out of put them upside down and they'll make all kinds of noise.

pretty straightforward.
nothing special.

U will have to jerk it off ,cause tranny have some kind of sleawes on couple of boltholes in a housing to help position it with the engine acuuratelly .Then it schould come out . good luck

Re: i need a 2001 mazda 626 4 cyl engine... and help

as far as iknow mazda there is not much room in an engine bay so u will have very restricted room to manouver a power plant to sleed off a tranny,u may have too tilt the whole thing upwards to get it off .Just fromm my experience (id few engine swap ups-honda ,itsu etc.)first time i did it,i did exactlyas rjitsu said i did left tranny in the bay,but then i took me a great deal of time to position engine on the hoist to meet with the tranny. untill then i'm always removing the whole thing(engine tranny) out it is easier to work on swaping out engines with the tranny on the garage floor that in the engine bay ( simple more manuvarebility) and the only thing to worry about when u putting the whole thing back in are the mounts .Anyway that just my oppinion good luck

Re: i need a 2001 mazda 626 4 cyl engine... and help

i've found that spending the 10 minutes to get the engine and trans lined up saves a great deal of time, as opposed to removing the trans harness, mounts, and axles... say, an extra 45 minutes? maybe an hour if the axles are seized in the hubs?

a block of wood tilting the torque converter side of the trans up slightly while sliding the engine in with the flywheel side slightly lower makes things easier. just get your torque converter studs lined up, or close, and pinch them together with one or two bellhousing bolts.

another thing i've learned is that disturbing as few things as possible is always best. so...

if you can take the engine out without the trans, and it's faster, and requires less work, why wouldn't you?

and...
if you're replacing timing belt and water pump, make sure to check your timing belt tensioner pulley. the hole on the pulley that the tensioner spring hooks on to commonly wears out. i've seen countless broken tensioners and springs on these 2.0L and just a handful of broken timing belts.

Re: i need a 2001 mazda 626 4 cyl engine... and help

ok now im going to sound retarded but i cant figure out how to take off the torque converter bolts! the hole left by the starter is so small and right under the intake manifold how many bolts are there? and where are they located inside there? do you know of a place with pictures.. i have been looking all mourning! and what is the flex plate? other then the bolts holding on the torque converter and the passanger side motor mount i have it ready to pull! this is taking me way way more time then it should... thanks so much for the help!
