coil pack testing

Anybody on the forum know the specs for testing an Escort coil pack? Haynes doesn't tell you.

The Autozone site says .4 ohms minimum resistance between VBat and C1 or C2. Is this correct?

Never tested my 93 1.9L coil pack but did my 98 3.8L Windstar...it has 4 leads. You check the pos lead on the outside against each of the 3 neg leads. I got these 3 resistances and went to autozone...had them pull a new coil pack and checked these resistances. Compared the 2 coil packs and they were within 5 % of each other, so my coil pack was good.

In did the same thing via Autozone. Mine checked out ok too.

you cant really ohm test a coil pack. unfortunately the best way to test a coil pack is to do a known-good swap test. ive never been able to sucessfully ohm test a coil pack since most of them fail on the secondary windings when there is voltage present. an ohm meter cannot recreate this situation nor can it test it even if the situation was present.

Another thing to try is an inline spark tester...it goes on one plug and the plug wire boot goes on tester...has a window to see the spark...repeat for each plug. Not real quantitative but if light is dimmer on one plug, may indicate coil isn't sending enough juice to that plug. Harbor Freight had them for $1.99.

Bought the inline tester from HF. $5.99. Will give that a try.
