89 Burb Pulley Removal
Have a 89 suburban that I am trying to pull the head off. But the head is connected to the power steering bracket. In order to get the bracket off I need to remove the power steering pulley. In order to pull off the pulley wheel I need to remove the hex bolt that holds on the pulley. So I have sprayed it with PB blaster and had 2 -- 3 foot cheater bars on the pulley and one on the bolt trying to get it to come loose. Ended up breaking the breaker bar- we had some serious pressure on that bolt. So does anyone know how to remove this bolt that holds on the pulley???
Should the hex bolt even be there or may it have been left from a previous owner?? |

Re: 89 Burb Pulley Removal
are you talking about the power steering shaft. normally, you need a ps pulley puller to get the pulley off. I think they just put that hex bolt in there to throw people off the scent.

Re: 89 Burb Pulley Removal
Does the hex bolt need to come out of the center of the pulley before I put the puller on?

thats part of the shaft of the p/s pump. The pulley is pressed on to this shaft by the installer. The removal tool grabs the pulley by the small grove you see at the center. The removal tool should have some type of plug or large looking washer that kind of fills in the hole while you remove the pulley. Kind of hard to describe....easy to show. To intsall you thread part of the install tool into the shaft where you see this allen head....its not really a hex bolt. Anyway....you set the pulley flush with the shaft, then thread the installer in the shaft of the pump and you then run the installder tight until you get the pully intalled and the very end of the pulley with the grove is then flush with the outer end of the p/s shaft. |
