Angry Black Box?????????

I've heard stories about a unit that is in all cars with AirBags that is sort of a black box of the auto industry. Is there such a device and where is it located in the Explorer. More specific what does it do and is there a way to reset the box or can you eliminate it all together? Thanks in Advance

Re: Black Box?????????

I heard of the "black boxes" but did the Auto Industry actually go through with installing them?! Sounds like they'd be labeling all consumers as criminals to me.

Originally when they were first put into cars back in the mid nineties they just contained info on the specs of the airbag deploying. But now they record data a certain amount of time before and after the accident. Some do it for 10 sec or more. Most can record speed, gforces of the accident, and airbag deployment. These were supposed to be used so car companies could make their cars safer but wouldn't you know law enforcement uses them too. Gm was the first carmaker to use them. But within the past five years almost all models of new cars have the "black box" in some form or the other. If I am not mistaken there is some kind of litigation going on about trying to keep law enforcement from using it in accident investigation but who knows how that will go. As far as disabling it and where it is at I don't think you can disable them and I would guess it would be a part of the computer.

Talking Re: Black Box?????????

No I am not trying to get out of an accident investigation. I just consider this a real invasion of my privacy. What' s next Bush sitting next to us as we drive?? If I buy the car and I own "MY" car I should be able to know what is in this vehicle. As for uninstalling the unit I was just wondering what would be the problem if I did it. Is there a federal law saying that this must be kept in the car?? Seems like Big Brother (the Government) is looking into every nook and cranny to find what we're doing ....and when. Hell look at the transponders we use daily for the commute. Did you know that these transponders are also a homing device that can be used to track your cars location??

Yeah two guys in black suits showed up today at my house and told me if I gave out any more info i would "disapear". So I am going to buy a cabin way in the mountains, live off the land, have 500 different guns for personal protection form the black ops team stationed to watch my house. That will really stick it to the "MAN". HE HE HE HE !

No I wouldn't as I am not stupid enough to get on the road after I have been drinking. And if I was stupid enough I would deserve anything that happened.
This black box is kind of one of those things where if you are not doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about.

Re: Black Box?????????

Transponders are just that, they are passive devices that 'respond' when a signal is applied to them. In this case with transponders the signal is a close proxmity signal, not something from say a satellite.

The only way they can track a vehicle with a toll transponder in it is if you drive on TOLL highways and go through the tolls, then they could track your progress on the highway system. But off the highway they have no idea where you are.....

Re: Black Box?????????

Actually, it's worse . . . and honestly, only the truely paranoid even care!

www.parapolitics.info

Rember all those Hiways and ByWays you thought your taxes were paying for . . . well . . . Texas is proposing a new satellite based vehicle tracking system to tax you on every mile driven on your highways and ByWays. Also,
automatic citation technologies will be used to issue tickets and collect revenue from motorists without having to go to all the expense and bother of hiring officers to chase you down and take the time to write the citation. Similar to transponders used in EZ-Pass toll systems, electronic vehicle identification number systems will broadcast the identity of car owners to sensors, ensuring no driver escapes notice because, for example, his license plate is dirty.

Another proposal would link the devices to the engine control system allowing police to immobilize any car at will. A Texas state representative, Larry Phillips, Vice-Chairman of the Transportation Committee, has introduced a bill http://www.thenewspaper.com/news/03/308.asp proposing electronic ID tags on all Texas automobiles.

Re: Black Box?????????

Howdy!

I was looking up some info about cars with black box technology. I'm not one who likes my cars controlled by a computer chip, especially when it can get cloogy (My audi has never had a problem)

Anyway, I came across this website about auto black boxes with a really good research section about how the black box is used in cars. The article can be found here: http://www.lawsuitsearch.com/auto-re...black-box.aspx

Good luck and drive safe!

Mr. B
