Engine coolant light comes on

My coolant light keeps coming on for a few minutes and then going off. I figured I should add coolant to fix this problem but then I started reading about flushing the system, etc. and now I am not even sure if I can fix this problem myself. My question is, should I add the coolant anyway to see if this fixes the problem? Or should I take it to a mechanic? The car temperature doesn't seem to go any higher than it normally does.
Thanks for your help!

Re: Engine coolant light comes on

check your resevoir and see the markings cold/hot. Now dependant on temperature of enhine ( aka cold or hot ) the level of coolant should be at the appropriate area ( can be a bit less ). You could have a leak( radiator/hose/etc. if it requires alot of fluid. this is simplest step todo 1st.
