fuel pump

how difficult is it to replace a fuel pump on a 2001 grand am? Or should I pay $800 to let the dealership replace it?

It's time consuming if you have not done it before but it can be done. If you have not done it before, it might take you a whole day or two days (Saturday and Sunday).

Have you replaced a couple of things in your vehicle, like spark plugs, spark plug wires, etc., then you you can probably do it.

However, you can call outside mechanic that does it on the side. You can probably pay them $100 + parts (fuel pump). I would suggest asking neighbors, friends for a mechanic that does it on the side which they would even go to your house and replace it there. As long as you know that the main problem is the fuel pump and that's the only thing need to be replaced then you should be safe with those mechanics.

Lastly, once you have a new fuel pump. Do not let your fuel go past 1/4 of the tank and fill it up immediately. Fuel pumps in the gas tank are using the fuel inside the gas tank to surround it in order to cool down the fuel pump when it operates. Do not make a habit of waiting until the gas light lit up before you fill it up otherwise your fuel pump won't last long.
