oil pump ?

I have a 92 regal with a 3.8 I had the timing cover off this weekend to replace the interupter magnet, while everything was off I gave everything a good cleaning...including the oil pump. Added fluids and started it today and found that the oil pressure light is on. I find out now that I should have packed the oil pump passages and gears with petroleum jelly to prime it Is there any way to get the light to go out without having to pull the timing cover again?

Exclamation Re: oil pump ?

I've tried to prime the pump with petroleum jelly twice now with no success The indicator light goes out for maybe 20 seconds then comes back on and stays on. Who has successfully done this? What is the trick?

Re: oil pump ?

Filled the filter with oil if it was new, got the pressure relief valve and spring back in correctly?

Re: oil pump ?

The filter was new and I filled with oil before I put it on. The spring is in correct. The book says to pack the cavity with petroleum. Are you supposed to pack every cavity or just certain parts? I've been packing the whole thing.

Re: oil pump ?

The second time around I only packed where the gears are and ended up with no oil pressure. Then I took everything off again and packed the gears along with the cavities that go to the oil filter. Still couldn't get it to prime. Is there a way to prime it with oil instead of petroleum? Maybe by using a hand pump to force oil up or down to the pump?

Re: oil pump ?

Some thing is wrong here this should not be a problem, are you sure the inner rotor is propoerly installed on the crank, also did you check the rotor clearance and gear to housing clearances, wear on the oil pump cover, new gasket on the oil filter adapter? Done this job doing exactly what you are doing, never had a problem. Autozone.com/repairinfo has good pics and step by step instructions, maybe you can see some different than what you ahve done. Wish I was there ,we would have fixed this by now, good luck.

Re: oil pump ?

maxwedge, I wish you were here too I'm getting tired of taking the timing cover off. I checked the autozone site and I don't see anything on there that I haven't already done. What did you mean when you asked if the inner rotor is installed on the crank? It can only go on one way. It has two flat spots on the inner gear and slots for the woodruf key. How else could it go on? I'll probably take the timing cover off again tomorrow. I'll check the clearances on the pump gears but I wouldn't think they were bad since it was fine before I had the cover off. Thanks for all your help so far. I'll let you know how it turns out.
