1995 Corolla stalls turning left
Hello all!
I have a small question I thought I'd throw out there for any takers. I have a 95 Corolla that just recently started stalling when accelerating during a left turn. This does not happen regularly, in fact, it probably happens once or twice in a single trip, once or twice per week. It typicaly happens when making just a regular left hand turn, like at an intersection. It doesn't cut completely off, but rather, it's like something is "choking" it. It corrects itself once I straighten out the vehicle. It does not occur when turning right. Like I said, it doesn't happen often, so I'm not too concerned at the present moment. I first noticed this about a month ago, and have taken it to a shop. They could not get a diagnostic and told me that I'd probably have to take it to the Toyota dealership to get it looked at. The vehicle has 116,000 miles on it. Any thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks! |

BUMP
Hi, I stumbled on this thread surfing to see if anybody else had this same problem. I own from new a 93 Corolla that reciently started to do the exact same thing! Only when I turn left does the car try and stall. If I go hard thru the turn I can make it stall almost everytime. I have a shop that has looked at it but they haven't been able to figure it out. It's family and I suspect they thought I was "crazy" when I first told them. Of course they the car was fine when I took it in. I did have a leak issue reciently in the "Vapor cell?" It would leak gas near the front driver side under the engine only when the car was turned off. Another curious thing I have noticed is that it seems to go away if the gas tank is full. My guys says maybe some sort of issue with the baffles in the tank. This car up until now has started every time for me. It has mostly original parts still. Very reliable....tilll now. Any thoughts? |

Re: 1995 Corolla stalls turning left
A stumbling death would be a fuel sxtarvation, which since you say it's not so bad or not even present when the tank is near full, sounds to be the case.
A abrupt, quick shut off is electrical (missing or loose battery hold down, loose cables, etc). |

Hi, Do you think it could be the EGR valve?

Re: 1995 Corolla stalls turning left
I have heard of cars stalling mysteriously because of the fuel pump pick-up being damaged or loose and part of it getting sucked into the pump inlet under some conditions. Pull the fuel pump and see if there is anything loose in the pick-up.

Re: 1995 Corolla stalls turning left
how could a cv joint stall an engine?
never heard of that one i must say there's definitely something related to fuel going on or ignition circuit. perhaps a loose wire to something is shorting when you make a left turn and falling free when the car straightening out check the alternator wires and all of the harness in the engine compartment for bare wires, a loose flapping one would be suspect to me especially if it is near the exaust |

Re: 1995 Corolla stalls turning left
I'm having the exact same problem. My 93 Corolla stalls when coming out of a left-hand turn -- only left, not right -- and only when the gas tank is low (1/8 tank or less). Will look into Brian's suggestion re the fuel-pump pick-up, but wondering if anyone knows whether that really did turn out to be the problem or has anyone else had this problem and fixed it?
