Has anyone 5.8l engine

I have a pair of 5.8l PD engines, and I was thinking of using one in a Mustang project. Has anyone or does anyone know if I can take the short block 5.8l and mate it to the heads and intake from the 5.0l, or better yet are there parts out there to make the 5.8l fuel injected. Obviously the computer would have to be recalibrated, but the idea of a 5.8l 88-91 fox body intriques me.

Re: Has anyone 5.8l engine

What do you mean by "PD" engine?

Ford put EFI 351Ws in vans and trucks, there is no mystery to doing it. FRPP has a Cobra lower intake for 351Ws. Do an online search for 351W Mustang swaps.

Re: Has anyone 5.8l engine

I have all the efi stuff off of my 351w/5.8l. If you need heads/intakes ect lemme know and I'll see what I can dig up. But yes you can bolt 302 heads onto a 351w. But, you will need a different lower intake because the 5.8l have about a 1" taller deck height than the 5.0.

Re: Has anyone 5.8l engine

I'm not sure what you mean by PD, but head swaps are the same for 302s and 351s. I'm in the process of building a 351w out of a '94 F150 for my fastback. I've got Edelbrock Performer RPM heads (pt# 60224) and they are interchangeable with the 5.0. Cams are a different story. Intakes are also a different story, but Ford Racing, Edelbrock, Trick Flow, they all make 351w intakes. As for fuel injection, if you can't find a system out of truck, Edelbrock, Holley, and a few others make plug and play kits that use a throttle body and carburetion style air cleaners. Try Summitt Racing or Edelbrock's website for more info.

What do you mean? 302/351w cams are interchangeable. Its not uncommon for 5.0HO cams to be used in 351w's. You just have to change the firing order of your plug wires.

Re: Has anyone 5.8l engine

The 5.0HO firing order is actually a little better also since it eliminates any possibility of crossfiring between plug wires. I think it might be between #7 and 8.

Also, you cannot simple bolt 302 heads onto a 351W. 351Ws have 1/2" head bolts whereas 302s have smaller 7/16" bolts. The 302 heads have to have the bolts holes drilled out. If you want to put 351W heads on a 302(or nearly any aftermarket head meant to fit both engines), you'll need either stepped washers or stepped bolts for best alignment.

Re: Has anyone 5.8l engine

What you say is true speedfreak. The 5.0HO firing order 13726548 is much more desireable for performance. Also it is more common to put 351w heads on 302's than visa versa. The bolts for the swap are sold daily.

I apologize for the brain fart. You are correct. The cams are interchangeable.

Re: Has anyone 5.8l engine

There are people that have put big block Chevies in Ford Pintos. Simply saying "I know a guy with a BBC in a Pinto" gives no details on what was involved, what it cost, the parts needed, how difficult it was, or if the swap even functioned afterward. Therefore, it doesnt contribute anything.
