Rebuild or replace?

My 99 Grand Cherokee 4.7L has a bad knock and one dead cylinder. It appears my options are to rebuild the existing motor or find a replacement (used or rebuilt). Anybody rebuild or replace one of these yet? Any good sources for engines or parts? Thanks Doug

Re: Rebuild or replace?

I would just sell the jeep as is and get another one. If it has a dead cylinder, then there could possibly be thrown valves or something to that effect, and i know that is not a quick fix and its also expensive, unless your doing it yourself. The rings might be bad to, that could be why there is no compression. My guess on parts would to be just to order them from a local parts shop or junkyard. Other than that i dont really know

I think your best bet would be to rebuild or sell like ben said. It will prolly be very hard to find a used 4.7L engine and new will be very expensive.

Re: Rebuild or replace?

Yeh, I'm thinking I'll try to sell as-is (Mechanic's Special). I Have not been able to locate any used (junk yard) engines in my area at this time. Either these engines break alot or JGC's don't crash. Plus, as I understand it, I'm limited to the 99 and 00 model years. Rebuilt/remanufactured engines are going for about $3500. Thanks for the replies.
