What lube should I use and does anyone know how much it holds?

Hard to answer your question when you don't tell us what exactly you have but here we go.
Most likely you will need something over two quarts, The Chiltons manual is once again incorect on the type and amount of fluid required.
In my 5 speed Getrag I used something like 2.7 quarts and I used Royal Purple Syncromax
From what I here The Gm Syncomesh is the prefured stuff.
