Had 4.10 gears installed on my car ~ was a great hassle

Well I opted to go to 4.10 gearing, instead of 3.73's. I took my car to Race Prep to have the gears installed. I figured I wasn't gonna even try to put the gears in, and I might as well leave it to the pros. THANK GOODNESS I did just that. Anyone that says that they installed 4.10 gearing inside of an LS1 by themselves is either A. Full of it, B. Has far more tools then any normal human would have, C. Took a long time to install the gears.

I watched in horror, as they had to dissassemble the torque arm, brakes, axle, and driveshaft, just to get into the gears. Once they got in there they thought they didn't have the right gasket for the driveshaft, as someone at GM decided to put in a nipple. A couple hours later they found out that the nipple wasn't a stock part, so they took it out, and put on the stock gasket. Oh yeah, and btw these are ASE Certified Mechanics and Machinists, and they took 9 hours to do the install with all the snags that they ran into, from figuring out how many spacers to use, check lash, etc... It was insane. I read online about people on LS1Tech.com professing to do this stuff by themselves in a few hours. I SAY BULL FUCKING SHIT!!!!!

Upon getting everything together I was told that the car would howl a little, until the rearend was broken in, and that I should heat cycle the car twice for 10 miles, with a 20-30 minute cool down period. I made sure to do the cool down runs, and am happy to report that the howling rearend is queting down alot. Haven't really gotten on the car yet, but I sure do have to shift alot more now.

This all depends on how he drives it. RPM's should jump around 400-550 in 6th gear. He would know better than I now though.

The torque arm and driveshaft can be off in about 15 minutes. Probably even quicker with the right tools sitting there waiting for you and the car on a lift. Getting the torque arm back on can be a bitch though.
You will love those gears when you get on it....more shifting but it is worth it performance wise.

I have had people say that they didn't see much of a decrease with the LSI 6M and 4.11 gears.

On street tires I could see why, however I plan on using DR's for all the 99+ GT Mustangs I run into, and remember, my car is STOCK.....

Oh when I said decrease I was talking about fuel economy, I think you will still be doing really well. As for the DR's, go for it but I don't think you will need them to take a 99+ GT.

Damn all you had to do was ask and you could have had my 4.08 gearing for free as long as I recieved your 3.73 gearing. lol

Definately interested in seeing some results on that swap! I bet ET goes down a lot assuming you have the traction.

You know, I was wondering about that.

I was talking to Ace$nyper about his Z28, he said he was getting low 20s like yourself before they switched to 'winter gas'.

I'm thinking because you two live where it's generally cooler, your motors run more efficiently. I baby the hell out of my LS1 and I'm hard pressed to average 16.9 city. I know Bobby has the same problem. SoCal has warm weather, only time it's 'cool' is when it's about 2am in the winter.

I wonder if the air density of your altitude has an effect, thinner air... less air reading in the MAF so the computer compensates with less fuel making it efficient? Hrm.

Stupid Southern California and it's sea levelness and dense air... and using up all my gas. grr.

I had 3.42 gearing in my car. I also don't think your 4.08's would fit, considering that you most likely have a different rearend, but thanks for the offer anyways.

That very well could be.
But I was still getting 27 MPG out in Iowa, at least on the highway. And that was cammed.

I know here at my altitude we lose about 0.5 points off compression just based on the thinner air.
