00 Trans Am enine tick?

I was just wondering if anyone else has run into this problem and or has an idea on what this could be.

I just bought a 2000 Trans Am with 56K miles, this past month and when you start it up there is a ticking in the engine. The colder it is outside, the lounder the ticking is. The ticking increases with the RPM's. The ticking usually goes away after a few minutes of warm up but it comes back slightly after you run the car hard. I was told that it could be the lack of oil on a cold start up so I put a K&N oil filter on it with the anti-drain back valve and some synthetic mobile one but that didn't change anything. I've put about a thousand miles on the car since I've bought it and it hasn't gotten any worse and my friend that's a technician said that he wouldn't worry about it if the noise goes away because you know nothing is bent, but I would like to know what it could be so if you've had this problem or have heard about it please enlighten me, thanks

Your friend is right.

If the tick goes away once warmed up a bit...it is nothing to worry about. It is called 'piston slap' and a good amount of generation III small block chevy's have it.

Some info is good...most is pretty biased.

I would suggest googling "Piston slap LS1" and reading up a little on it. Should give you a pretty good idea of the so-called 'problem' that is piston slap.
Personally...I think it has to do mostly with the aluminum block and the internals. They need warmed up before they are to proper size.

i got the same problem man. I thought something was wrong but i came down 5 min later and it went away.

it is nothing to worrie about, just run a synthetic oil and a k&n oil filter,and you will be fine, it is just the pistons don't get to the right size till they are warmed up and expaned. Just run the synthetic for the protection and it is just better for the motor.

my friend has a gmc with a 350 vortec motor, he has the same problem, but like yours it always goes away after warm up. If you want to feel better about, which i would, go to a gm dealer and see if they have any updates as far as a memo from gm that says that your year make and model vehicle is prone to doing this, and after much rigorous testing we found it to be inconsiquential. This is something I refuse to waste my money on.

I use the stock ACDelco filters...every bit as good, but $3 cheaper.

How long have you had your problem, thanks guys for the advice. It's making me feel a better about the noise and that I got a steal from the dealership which thought that it needed an engine, but it was a dodge dealership.

Piston slap! Soudns bad, but dun worry, like you said it goes away with the warm up, so you are cool. it happens alot, from what i hear.
