klunky shifting and jerking

Our 2002 Daewoo Lanos 5speed shifts jerky or klunky from 1st to 3rd, then short of smooths out between 4th and 5th gear shifting. Anyone know what causes this? It sort of feels like there is play in the flywheel or something, is the best I can explain it.

I checked the motor mounts and they appear to be ok. I'm not sure if sloppy shifting is a tell tale sign of a bad throw out bearing, or something to do with the flywheel and clutch.

We bought the car with 47K miles on it. It's clean and drives great. This is our only problem with it. It gets about 35mpg.

Sounds like the synchros are worn in the trans. SOmeone was probalby pretty hard on it at one time.

Check with the local Daewoo dealer, if you can find one, you may still be under powertrain warranty.

Thanks for the input. I wish I would have found this site a few weeks ago. The power train warranty just ran out last week. (50,000 miles) I'll call the dealer just in case someone can hook me up.

Thanks for the advice. Now I need to look for a post for the timing belt procedure.

powertrain is 5/60000 miles whoever told you that its up at 50k is wrong.

The timing belt is not easy on a lanos. the tensioner that tightens the timing belt is done by rotating the water pump. Without the special tool to turn it it is quite difficult. Also if you replace the timing belt replace the waterpump gasket at least. It will leak after you rotate it.

There are no marks on the valve cover on the Lanos. The cam marks have to face each other. Also getting the power steering pump pulley off is not easy either.

I would not recommend doing this unless you have expirience.

The timing belt is a must replace at or before 60000 miles. It breaks, it bends the valves.
