Cant get My rotors off My Lude!
I have a 99' prelude and am trying to figure out how to get the rotors off. I think they may be pressed on but my uncle says i can still get them off. If anyone can tell me how please let me know....Thanks for any help in advance.

There should be either 2 or 4 flat head phillips screws on the inner part of the rotor. They are extremely difficult to get out. Best chance is using a hammer driver and a #3 phillips bit, or the heads can be drilled off with a 3/8's drill bit, drilling is the easiest way. If you have done this and it is still not coming off, it is probably corroded in the area where the hub and rotor fits together. Clean that groove out and wd-40 it.

Re: Cant get My rotors off My Lude!
heating those little screws w/ a torch also helps and even after they're out, it won't want to come off so have a rubber mallet handy!

Re: Cant get My rotors off My Lude!
I have replaced rotors on 2 gen4 preludes, I had to drill the heads off these screws. I think the purpose of these fasteners is to hold the rotors on on the assembly line, the wheel and lug nuts do hold the rotor after you install the wheel.
But we can start the debate again about the need for these screws, some say if honda put them on, so they do have a purpose, but you can spent awhile drilling the screws out. The threaded end of the screw corrodes on the back side of the rotor and that is what makes it diffucult to remove. I tried the hammer screw driver/#3 bit and I still had to drill the heads off, and they are still headless. |

Re: Cant get My rotors off My Lude!
i would put the screws in IF and only IF you can get them out w/o wrecking them. They're just in place to hold the rotor straight in the caliper....if you can get it straight and put the tire on, you should be good to go!

Re: Cant get My rotors off My Lude!
Ok so first of all the drillin the screws out worked fine rotors came right off and i got the new ones on jus fine but then another problem came up. Not sure what happened but when i was putting the caliper back on, the piston to the caliper fell out. I looked up on hondaautomotiveparts.com to see if i had to hav a whole new caliper or what and there is a caliper seal kit that i assumed would fix the problem. But when i looked back on the caliper i really couldn't see how the seal kit fit into the boot with the piston. Is this right to fix my problem? And does anyone know how to fix it with the seal kit? I always end up having one prob after another when fixing my car. Thanks for any help.

Re: Cant get My rotors off My Lude!
I would first off suggest a manual. the retainer screws are not a big deal, they dont really do anything other than keep people like you and me from attempting to save money at home. if you took the cover off your master cylinder, your piston should not have come out either. it may just be a matter of stuffing the piston back into the boot. if nothing is cracked or torn, i would definatley say so.
good luck

Re: Cant get My rotors off My Lude!
Ok got it all done, i had to go buy a caliper seal kit, so basically i had to go pay $72 for two pieces of rubber. Man honda will rip you a new one on parts. Anyway thanks for all the help and i do believe i will be purchasing a manual soon. Thanks.
