2000 Malibu internal engine failure

Our mechanic told us that our 2000 Malibu has this internal engine failure and is unfixable.
This is a very loud rattleing when the engine is cold. As it warms up it is not too bad. The mechanic says that we need a whole new engine for this car. I find this unbelievable as this car is not very old at all. We were wondering if anyone else has heard of this problem. It will cost us 5,000 dollers to fix and we just can not see doing that.

5000? that sounds crazy even for an engine swap. ask him exactly what failed and get back to us.

Noisy lifters and piston slap are fairly normal in the 3100, especially in colder temperatures. Does it run fairly well?

I would definitely get a second opinion, and even if it does need a new engine, it should be waaayyy cheaper than that

Hello,
Im considering buying a car of this year and found this possible fix.

Read the bottom comment about replacing the pcv valve. Maybe that will help?
