reset piston in rear passenger side caliper

i have a 92 1.8li escort gt that has rear calipers. i start pulling off old pads then started to pushing back the piston on the caliper.well it would not move at all. that it started bending my c-clamp . in my "repair manual "it talks about a allen wrench type valve that needs to be turned in order to push back the piston.however this caliper has not that. i also opened up the bleeder valve to help releave the pressure. nothingcould this caliper be shot or what? im stumped. hello?...anyone out there?

Re: reset piston in rear passenger side caliper

go to autozone and describe the problem to them. they MIGHT have a tool that you can rent to do this. what youre experiencing is the caliper self adjuster. you have to 'screw' the piston in then push it in and repeat. usually turn it a half turn then push it in some. it takes a bit but itll go in. if you dont have luck on renting a tool you might look into buying what looks like a cube with a bunch of nubs on it. they will fit into the slots on the piston and you can fit a 3/8 drive extension into the opposite side of the nubs you need.

well,i found that allen wrench type valve. it was hidden underneath or i should say inside a cavity that a 14mm bolt was covering. the manuel did not say anything about it being covered by a rust bolt.oh well. i just gave it a couple of turns and reset.

Re: reset piston in rear passenger side caliper

now remember were talking about rear calipers. if you look behind the caliper you will see a bolt head (14 mm) just remove that bolt and inside that cavity you,ll see the Allen head bolt that needs to turn in order to reset that piston.

As far as adjustment for the parking brake you screw it in until the pad touches the rotor. Then, back it off 1/2 turn. Good luck to you.
