Question Caddy air repair

A 1988 Seville. She runs great. The air conditioning can freeze your collunes. However, the air goes into the rug most of the time. Then it ain't so cold. All I want to do is redirect the air to the upper vents. That's all.

Air conditioning specialists tried 3 times to fix it and failed. The specialists gave up. Caddy dealer wants $2600 to replace compressor and evaporator coil in order to fix it.

So I cried:"There's plenty of cold air, it's just the direction that's the problem. Why replace everything?"

"Yea, it's workin' but it's still gonna cost you $2600."

The car is worth $2000. Is there nothing that a non-mechanic can do?

Your problem is a vacuum leak in a diaphragm that controls a set of "trap doors" between the lower and upper vents in the dash. You may have to get a vacuum diagram from Chiltons or even a more accurate book such as a Cadillac shop manual.

The part costs about $30 to replace, but the labor is a nightmare since you have to take apart the dash.
