rear brakes are driving me crazy help

my dash brake lite came on a week ago and they started to make a grinding noise in the rear shoes so I did a rear brake job no big deal (right). Had a lot of trouble getting the rear drums off but after backing off the star adjuster I still had to bang them off with a hammer. Put the new shoes on and I thought I was done but know , the drums would not go back on. So I cleaned up the rough edge of the old drums and they went back on with some help. could not spin the drums after. so I took it all apart again to find that the emergency brake cable was stuck. Then I freed the cable up by pushing it all the way back and spayed the cable with wd40. the drums when back on better and moved freely. So I figured that I was done but know such luck. My dash lite is still on and the emergency brake is slowly catching again and drums are very warm after a 10 mile trip. WHAT NEXT HELP!!!! I will not give up and bring it to the dealer. Now it's between me and these brakes and I mean to win. Any help would be graetly appreciated. THANKS "BEMAN"

Re: rear brakes are driving me crazy help

Lift the dust boot at the base of the brake hand lever. Do a bit of inspection, cleaning, and lubrication. Pour on the oil, just mop up excess.

Check to make sure the hand brake lever is still secure to the floorpan. Is it getting loose? If so, check to see if floorpan is splitting around either of the two mounting screws.

I had to buy a new lever assembly and reinforce the floorpan from underneath.

Re: rear brakes are driving me crazy help

what year is it? you might have to replace the parking brake cables as it sounds like theyre sticking. also the light, is it the red one? anyway those switches that kick that light on usually stick because they dont move much and after dozens of miles they move and cant return. look for the switch on the line and have someone pump the brakes and tap the line/switch gently with a wrench to loosen it up.

Re: rear brakes are driving me crazy help

What year and mileage? How were the rear wheel cylinders? Both sides were frozen on my 2001 @ 57Kmi. The rear brakes were due for r/r anyway. Wound up being a $377 state inspection for me. Thankfully my extended warrany covered a bunch of stuff, so of course the dealer went overboard on anything the warranty co would pay for . I think the brake fluid reservoir level switch will set off the red (E)-brake light as well if the brake fluid lvl is low.

G/luck
