Why!?!?

This question goes out to any one who has ever done any work on their cars.

Recently GonthraX had "Fun With Alternators" Day. After I found my sockets I was left wondering the same thing I've always wondered after working on my car.

WHY IN THE HELL DO YOU USE A 12MM BOLT, A 5/8ths BOLT, AND A 9/16ths BOLT WHEN THREE 5/8ths WOULD DO THE JOB!?
Now of course different sized nuts and bolts are necessary for some things, but for mounting a little alternator!?

Even further, if you were going to use different sized bolts, why not use all metric!? Or vice versa

It's all a big conspiracy by automobile manufacturers to keep us continually pissed off. Even more annoying is when you go to change something like an alternator or AC compressor....and when you do find the socket you need, the head of the bolt is smoothed out round because some @#$% at the shop decided it was best to tighten that 10mm bolt using an impact wrench. Such was the case when we changed out my compressor.

I have to say I haven't found that working on my car.

everything is either 8 10 12 or 14 mm.

The SiR is fine - all metric thank goodness. Mind you, one of my '70s Civics and both of my '70s TA22 Celicas had combos of Metric/imperial bolts everywhere

My car seem to have a lot of 13 sized bolts on it. It is pretty standard, but I do know what you mean. Once having to work on my friends 1984 Honda Accord and My cousins 1988 ford Ranger.

Having worked on more cars than most ppl here I have come up with
Automotive enginers HATE mechanics.

I believe that at some long forgotten point in the history of the Automobile some long forgotten fued was started between the people who design cars, and the people who fix them.

And it seems the designers and enginers won.
I think they must delibtritly make cars hard to fix in order to annoy mechanics!
