Thinking about buying a '98 Protege

Hey, just needed some input. I've never owned a Mazda before but I'm considering buying a 1998 Mazda Protege DX from a dealership. Manual transmission. It's mileage is a bit high (146K) and the price is right -- just below KBB. I was just wondering what is the longevity of these cars, can they go well into the 200K range with little problems? What are some of the maintenance things I can expect with this mileage (besides the usual tuneups/oil changes)? What are some performance upgrades for this specific car?

I am at 189K miles on my '95 Protege LX 1.5 Liter with a 5 spd. manual tranny. I bought it new. The '95-'98 models are the same generation. The 1.6 liter is the same engine type as the 1.5 liter.

This is a very reliable engine and tranny combo. I have not had any mechanical problems with either. In fact, I am still on the original clutch.

That said, I have maintained it well with regular oil, filter, and tranny oil changes. It currently burns/leaks around 1 quart of engine oil every 5K miles, which is very acceptable considering the age. I still get between 31 and 39 mpg.

Problem areas include spark plug wires going bad, EGR valve clogging up with carbon deposits, muffler flange rusting out, the a/c compressor clutch going out at 150K miles, and the rubber air intake snorkel cracking. Not serious issues, just things to look for. This engine has mechanical valve lifters, so check to see if the intake valve lash has been periodically inspected and/or adjusted. Same goes for the rubber timing belt.

All in all, a reliable and economical car.

i totally agree with the above... the protege is tied in my opinion with the miata in being the best car mazda makes. i wouldnt think twice about getting in one and taking it cross country
