Question transmission

I have a 1997 Grand Cherokee w/130,000 miles on it. Sometimes when the transmission shifts it will try to do like a double shift up and down to second and third gear. Now it is acting like it is shifting into a neutral spot after going into second gear for about 1 second. Is my transmission going out? I'm going to do the fluid and filter on it this weekend and install a drain plug in the pan and drain the fluid again after about one week to try and get completely fresh fluid in it. Any ideas?

Re: transmission

It may be something electronic. You might spring for diagnostics at your local shop. You can't diagnose this yourself without the equipment.

Many late model transmissions are shifted electronically. If your tranny was toast, I don't think your Jeep would be moving at all.

That would be my first step.

Re: transmission

I changed the fluid and filter this weekend and I found some brass looking flakes in the bottom of the pan. Any idea on where these came from? Some kind of bearing or something.

Re: transmission

more information on the rig would be appreciated.

the i6 versus the v8 makes a difference as they have different transmissions.

Re: transmission

good to know
You have a 42re transmissions (while the v8s will have a 44re or 46re depending on what displacement)

In my opinion it's a horrible transmission. The one on my Jeep was rebuilt once (before I bought the Jeep) and replaced with a new one after the rebuilt one failed after I bought the Jeep.

When it failed on me after I just bought the Jeep (bought it used) it was doing the thing where it'd shift into a neutral spot for a few, then finally catch a gear. The Jeep ended up stranding me on a Friday (the start of a 3 day weekend non the less) and the transmission was replaced under the drivetrain warranty from the used car place I bought it from)

I'd check the jeepforum.com search for more info on the topic as it's been discussed quite a few times.
