Antenna Replacement

My wife and I have a '99 Pontiac Grand Am and somehow the radio antenna has become broken. I am wondering if this is easy to fix and something that someone with just basic car fixing skills can do?

Just in case, is there any information available on how to do this type of replacement? Maybe I can read up and decide for myself.

Welcome to AF!!

This is a very simple repair. Replacements are readily available and can be changed with basic hand tools. The hardest part is to gain access to the antenna base and thread the lead. Good Luck!

You failed to mention if it was a power antenna or a hard shaft. If its a power antenna your easiest answer is to replace it, like GTP Dad said its pretty simple. If you have a standard hard shaft antenna you might be able to replace just the shaft (which threads off above the fender) look for flats on the round shaft! If this is the case find a used one at a yard or buy a new one from a dealership. Or replace the whole thing from an auto parts store or Meijer for $20.

So I can basically only replace the antenna - I don't need to replace all of the cabeling, etc. that leads back to the radio?

When I looked at it last night, I popped the trunk and it looked like it was all connected and could only be replaced if I swapped out the whole thing.

When my wife returns from work, I will take a closer look at it.

If the outside extension has been unscrewed and the threads are good you can just buy an external antenna. If the mount and threads are damaged you will probably need to replace everything. It is simple replacement and shouldn't take a lot of effort.
