92 Golf Test Mass Air Flow Sensor (Hard Start and Hesitation)
Currently I am having difficulty figuring out what is wrong with my 92 Golf. The car has difficulty starting when it is cold but starts after two or three tries. When it is still cold it has a hesitation problem where it just doesn't want to accelerate but then kicks in slowly or suddenly. It was suggested to me that it could be the mass air flow sensor but that is not an inexpensive piece of equipment. Is there any way of checking to make sure that I have a faulty sensor? Any other suggestions to what is wrong would be helpful. I have just replaced the fuel pump and did the tranny fluid and oil change. The engine was just swapped with a 1.8L GTI engine that matched my original but I had to keep my fuel injection system and intake for electronics compatability issues.

Re: 92 Golf Test Mass Air Flow Sensor (Hard Start and Hesitation)
i would say a ect is more of a problem than the maf sensor. unplug the sensor and see if its easier to start (on the big coolant flange on front of head its the top sensor closest to the valve cover)

Re: 92 Golf Test Mass Air Flow Sensor (Hard Start and Hesitation)
Thanks for the advice. I actually went to go and replace the MAF and when I was checking the replacement I decided to test mine again and mine tested positive. The guy I was buying the part from noticed that I had done an engine swap and kept its metal coolant connection and sensors and he informed me that the different years had different sensors in that location. SO essentially I don't even have the sensor you asked me to check. I'll have to switch it to the original.
