Loud 3.8 under acceleration
I have a 93 TS with a 3.8. It has started giving a loud roaring sound under acceleration that almost sounds like an exhaust leak, but it mysteriously isn't there when I check for exhaust leaks. I was able to get it to make some noise by hitting the throttle while under the hood, and the noise seemed to be coming from the back side rear of the motor. The donut appears to be fine. I checked vacuum looking for a plugged cat and it held 19.5 at 2,000 RPM. The sound seems to be much louder under load... My brother suggests maybe it's a hydraulic pump in the tranny. I'm wondering if it might be in the EGR system. Any ideas???

Re: Loud 3.8 under acceleration
I would really suggest you doublecheck the donut: I'm about to install the fourth on mine and it is natural that it would be that on yours too. A fact of life....

Re: Loud 3.8 under acceleration
The donut is a metal gasket ring that fits where the crossover pipe connects to the front and rear exhaust manifolds. They do burn out and can be a huge source of noise when they go bad. They are not expensive to buy but they may be a pain to change in a van. Good Luck!
