clutch problems...

I have a 96 cav. with a 2.2

This is a winter beater car that i have been running. It has a leak in the hydraulic clutch system someplace (I was just adding fluid to keep it going) Now fluid in the resivor is not droping but the clutch is getting weird. It goes half way to the floor with no effect and no effort. abut half way it catches and the movement to disingage the clutch is very small... I figure it is either the slave or the master. Where would you start? the repair book I have is very poorly writen on the drivetrain it says that the transaxle has to be removed to replace the slave is this true? help me out!

Try bleeding the clutch line, you probably got air in it. (I'm having the exact same problem on my 95, if anyone knows where the bleeder is please let me know) I'm 90% sure this is all you will have to do.

release cylinder left side of clutch housing .bleeder valve on release cylinder is right above fitting for hydraulic fluid line.

I've never done this before, is it the same as bleeding the breaks? I followed the house from the reserve to the something ( I suck ass with transmissions ) I'm assuming its the clutch housing? It does have what looks to be a bleeder on it. (embarassed face here)

ya pretty much, have someone hold the clutch in and open the bleeder when it stops flowing tighten bleeder before letting clutch up. may have to do it a couple of times. watch that you do not suck to much out of the master cylinder

well I have bad news for you. it's calling for 5.8 hours to replace the slave cylinder so yeah the tranny has to come out. take a line lock and pinch off the rubber hose between the master and the slave cylinder and check the pedal. if it's still soft, it's the master. if it's rock solid, it's the slave. let me know!
